Okay sooo… I'm entering the Golden Coil Cover Co Okay sooo… I'm entering the Golden Coil Cover Contest again! ✨ This is my second time submitting, and I’m really excited (and honestly a little nervous) to share this year’s piece. It’s a pink and yellow moth layered over a dreamy burst of florals. 🦋🌸 I created this illustration just for the contest, which always makes sharing feel a bit more vulnerable. I poured so much love and intention into it, and I pushed myself to add more detail than I usually do. And honestly, it felt so good to get lost in all the little lines and petals. Spring is officially on the horizon, and I couldn’t be happier! 🌿✨ We’ve had the most beautiful 17°C weather the past couple of days, and even though it’s cooling down again over the weekend, I know winter is on its way out. That alone is enough to make me giddy! 😆🌸 This is hands down my favourite time of year, longer days, fresh blooms, and that feeling of everything waking back up again. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that when you find the right tools for you, everything just clicks. Lately, I’ve been all about my display tablet + my Photoshop setup, and honestly? Best switch I’ve made. I used to work mostly in Procreate on my iPad, but the layer limits? Yeah…they weren’t vibing with my need for big files and extra detail. So late last year, I made the jump, and I haven’t looked back since! Brush-wise, I’m completely obsessed with @mimimoo_illustration ’s brushes lately. They’ve got the perfect mix of texture + personality, which is huge for me because I never want my work to feel too digital. I love using brushes that mimic real materials, adding a little paper texture over the top, and keeping my lines just imperfect enough to give my work that handmade feel. That said, it’s not easy fighting my instinct to make everything look too polished. I have to remind myself that a little messiness = charm. (Working on it. 😂) Anyway, tell me, what’s your go-to art tool? That one thing you swear by and can’t live without? They take four different colour palettes and a full two years of second-guessing before they even start to feel right. 😂 In early 2023, I visited New York City for the first time and I completely fell in love with it. The energy, the iconic landmarks, the little shops tucked into every street corner… I had the best time just being there. When I got home, I knew I wanted to commemorate my trip with a detailed illustration. Something that captured that exact feeling: light, fun, full of energy. Easy, right? Wrong. Because apparently, trying to translate an emotion into a colour palette is way harder than it sounds. I started with my usual colours… hated it. Went back to the drawing board with a more elegant palette—it looked gorgeous but didn’t feel like me or the energy I was looking for. Then I tried a softer, lighter palette, which was lovely, but still didn’t quite hit the mark. Now? I’m on my fourth iteration of the colours, and for the first time… I actually think this might be the one. 🤞 So tell me, have you ever had a project that just wouldn't let you finish it? If I had to pick the hardest decision in my creati If I had to pick the hardest decision in my creative process? Easy. Colour. Every. Single. Time. 🎨✨ I love colour. I mean, I literally couldn't create without it but actually choosing a colour palette? That’s where things get tricky. It’s one of those decisions that can either flow effortlessly (rare) or send me into full decision-fatigue mode (more common than I’d like to admit). It’s why I have a set of pre-made colours I know work well together—to save myself from spending way too long overthinking combinations. But even with that safety net, I still find myself second-guessing, tweaking, and sometimes needing to just walk away and reset my brain. Seriously, some of my best colour decisions have happened after a snack break. 😂 And then, there’s hand-lettering, where decisions come much easier. I don’t stress over every tiny detail or spend hours tweaking letterforms. I like to keep it intuitive and let it be a little playful and imperfect, because the moment I try to force it, it just loses all its charm. So yeah… some creative decisions completely derail me (looking at you, colour), while others I don’t even overthink. For the longest time, I thought I had to have a pe For the longest time, I thought I had to have a perfect process. That real artists probably had everything figured out, and their work just… flowed. 🎨✨ But the more I create, the more I realize: the process is never perfect. It’s always a little messy, a little unpredictable, and honestly? That’s kind of the magic of it. Over time, you find a way of working that feels familiar—bits and pieces you use again and again. But since every illustration has its own personality, my process shifts to match what the piece needs. Because you know… art has a mind of its own sometimes. 🤷‍♀️ Every illustration I make starts with thumbnails. Quick little sketches where I play around with ideas and composition. Once I find the one that feels right, I refine it a bit more, adding structure before moving forward. Even then, my sketches are usually a bit chaotic. I try to keep things loose and let the ideas take shape naturally, but my inner perfectionist still likes to get the better of me. Over the years, I’ve gotten better at embracing the imperfections, because that’s where the personality of an illustration really shines through. ✏️✨ Colour is where things start to feel real for me. I always stick to a limited palette because I love the balance and harmony it brings. And, as usual, pink somehow sneaks its way in, even though it’s still not my favourite colour. At this point, I’ve just accepted that it does what it wants. 😂💖 And then, finally, I get to a finished piece. Some days, everything falls into place effortlessly. Other days, I overthink every little detail. 🙃 But at the end of it all, I love the process, the messy starts, the playful colours, and the textures that make digital art feel a little more handmade.
